Why Material Selection Matters More Than You Think
The pool deck is the largest visible surface in your outdoor space. It frames the water, defines the palette, sets the tone of the entire design, and is what you and your guests walk on every day the space is used. Getting it right is both aesthetic and long-term performance.
Natural Stone
Natural stone — bluestone, sandstone, quartzite, limestone — is the benchmark material in high-end outdoor design.
Advantages: Unique (no two slabs identical), improves with age, certain stones stay relatively cool underfoot.
Challenges: Requires sealing, thicker stone needs skilled installation, $25–$80+ per square foot installed.
Travertine
Travertine remains widely used — for good reason in the right application.
Advantages: Natural texture is slip-resistant, stays cooler than denser materials, proven long-term performance when sealed.
Challenges: Reads as the default choice — no longer signals luxury the way it once did. Limited to warm beige palette. Requires maintenance.
Porcelain
Large-format porcelain tile has moved aggressively into the luxury outdoor market — and for good reason.
Advantages: Near-zero porosity, dimensional precision, huge aesthetic range, minimal maintenance.
Challenges: Polished versions can be slippery when wet (specify correct slip-resistance rating). Darker formats get hot. Lacks the character depth of real stone.
